MythTV

MythTV is a open source TiVo replacement that runs on Linux. It kinda makes you want to use a cheap PC as a PVR and ditch the TiVo service. I'm not against TiVo, in fact I love it. But it's still so expensive. Lifetime service is now up to $299 and that's the lifetime of the TiVo, not your lifetime. We've gone through so many TiVo units...one failed modem and two or three failed hard drives. Our most recent TiVo purchase was for one of the new 40 hr. silver units for $80 bucks from Amazon.com and we were able to transfer the lifetime service from our old Series 1 unit to this one because I complained to TiVo Customer Service about purchasing the Home Media Option 3 months before they gave it away for FREE. If we had to buy a brand new unit with the service all over again, I'd have to seriously think about it. Who knows how much longer TiVo will be in business?
